Will a woman who lifts weights look like a man?

A widespread popular belief is that a woman who lifts weights will look like a man. These claims are unfounded and generate an unjustified aversion to weights in a woman who is just starting a healthy lifestyle.

Women do not produce the same amount of testosterone as men. Men produce 280 to 1,100 ng/dL, while women only produce 15 to 70 ng/dL! Which is why we will NEVER look like them, unless we modify our testosterone production with drugs.

Your body is NOT predisposed to grow like a man's. Lifting weight will bring you more benefits than consequences. Some are:

  1. You can shape the body at your convenience. You can work more intensely on the areas or muscle groups that you are most interested in developing, depending on your goals.
  2. You will oxidize more fat. Muscle is a metabolically active tissue and, for this reason, it accelerates your metabolism and requires more energy for its maintenance. With a good amount of muscle you will oxidize fat efficiently, even at rest. Not to mention that it will make you look toned and improve your body composition. In addition, lifting weight produces a physiological effect known as EPOC (excess oxygen consumed after training), which means that after exercise our body consumes more oxygen than at rest for recovery, and therefore, it uses more calories. . EPOC after weight training lasts up to 24 hours.
  3. You will reduce cellulite. Weight exercises activate specific areas of the buttocks and legs, which promotes circulation in the area and little by little decreases the percentage of fat and, therefore, cellulite.
  4. It will help you avoid injuries and bone fractures. Lifting weight activates growth hormone. This allows you to gain muscle mass, oxidize more fat and improve bone density.
  5. You will look more feminine. Contrary to what many think, the body of a woman who exercises weights does not become an androgynous or masculinized body, but rather a strong, agile, molded and defined body.
  6. You will increase the metabolic rate. This means that by increasing muscle, little by little your body will need more calories to maintain itself and with the same daily activity you will spend more calories.
