Why do women lose less fat than men?
Have you gone training with your boyfriend/brother and he sees results faster than you? Do you know why it's so hard for you to lose fat? Here I give you the answer:
- Evolution. Women's bodies evolved to be more efficient at conserving energy: we can survive starvation better. In case of survival, men would die faster, which is why they lose fat more easily. This happens because women have to be able to retain more calories in the event of getting pregnant or have enough calories to maintain the high caloric expenditure that pregnancy brings with it. A woman's minimum fat levels will always be higher than a man's.
- Difference in body size compared to that of men. In general, women weigh 10% less than men. In addition, we retain approximately 10% more fat and 10% less muscle mass. Therefore, we have a lower basal metabolic rate than men (that is, we burn fewer calories at rest).
- The thermic effect of food is lower in women because we eat less than men, since we need fewer calories than them to survive.
- Less caloric expenditure during exercise. Women burn fewer calories when exercising, precisely because we have less muscle mass and are smaller. That is, we are not as fast or strong as them. That is why a man and a woman who train at the same intensity, for the same amount of time, will burn different amounts of calories. For a woman to burn the same amount of calories as a man, she will have to train 20-30% longer. Then, a woman's deficit will be lower, therefore she will oxidize less fat.
- Menstrual cycle. We have hormones that vary from week to week and affect our appetite, metabolism and mobilization of fat reserves. This directly affects how we lose fat, as our metabolic adaptations happen faster than a man's: our metabolism slows down faster than a man's when “dieting” (even 20% faster). Our fat loss process is much more complex than that of a man with stable testosterone levels throughout the month.
